First, let me say that this review does not in any way reflect the achievement of the two gentlemen who completed the PCT in winter.....it is solely a critique of the film.
I typically devour anything having to do with the outdoors. I have watched every single climbing/backpacking movie there is. I have also backpacked extensively, including the Sierra, and portions of this trail, so I am a huge fan of the genre. I had heard about this feat and was very excited to see this movie, but ultimately, was disappointed.
I'm no filmmaker, but I was actually pretty shocked at how uninspiring and uninteresting this film was. It is about an amazing accomplishment, yet there is little description of what the men went through (save one aspect of the hike). Instead, we get creepy John Muir scenes, overly dramatic music, staged re-creations, shots of the two men looking off in the distance, overly long scenic shots (that all seem to use the same repetitive camera technique), and monotone talking heads. What should have been fascinating, compelling, and illuminating, ends up being tedious and contrived.
I think a much better film would have been achieved had these two gentlemen taken cellphone video from the trail, documenting what they went through, and showing the hike as it happened.
