Used to be movies about orphans and poor kids who simply had nothing and had to make there way on PBS back in the 70's. Nothing this rough, but the story lines were the same, kids filling in the gaps left behind by parents who could not raise them.
Kids will create their own morality from what they see and experience. If their minds aren't channeled into school projects and sports, they make direct experience their teacher. It's a harsh life for kids who have to make decisions based on where they will sleep tonight, and how they will find food.
The poor and their children will fill in the cracks of society in any way they can to survive. This movie had potential, hard to know what they cut out to make it work. I like stories of independence and imagination. Look at how dreadful and abusive the Simpsons are as a group, but they stick together.
