For those of us unfamiliar to the debate and purpose of Charter Schools-this video clarifies that. Additionally, viewers get the understanding that education reform is taking a new direction by allowing parents in low-performing areas to have a voice in deciding where to send their child to school-even if it means parents must enter a "lottery" to take part in offering that opportunity to their child-they will!
As a strong advocate in favor of "traditional" public schools, I found the conversations concerning the differences between charter & traditional equally as enlightening. I really liked the fact that the documentary was shown from the parent & community points of view as opposed to highlighting the political points-which most documentaries tend to do. Even the 4 children being documented were vested. They desired a better education because they saw how important it was to their parents. That was powerful!
It makes me wonder how often educators have to reveal the startling statistics concerning the achievement gap between black/hispanic & white students towards advancing on to college, to get more parents engaged in demanding more & better for their children. The video spoke of the problem being the "educational system" I agree, but I also think that parents have to bare the important responsibility of staying informed and connected with their schools to understand how critical they are to their child succeeding as well.
