ENCOUNTER is a movie with good intentions but failed to meet expectation. Where it can fail in science fiction, it can make up with special effects. Where the special effects are lacking, it can substitute with a good story. ENCOUNTER has none of these. It touches on religion, but never quit makes the connection.
Nothing is ever explained nor does the alien tell us the what, or why it came to Earth in the first place. ENCOUNTER tries to make too many points, but ends up just being confusing. Meanwhile, the FBI shows up out of nowhere, but we never quite figure out why they believe it to be malevolent. Worst of all, the implausibility of some of the actions of the characters is just too much to explain away.
For instance, you'd would expect a kid to bring home an alien egg he found in a field, and hide it in the garage. But not adults, who should know better. A simple change from adults to kids would have improved the believabilty 100%. Instead, ENCOUNTER turns out to be a joke -- that's not that funny.
