This show really deals with and targets a lot of issues, controversial and other. I love that the writers did not back down from the emotions that real families encounter with the issues presented. If you were already a teen in the 2001 time frame you will understand many of the issues this series dealt with. Why we faced political, sexual and familial issues in 2012 is as much a result of 2001-2008, and the story line points this out. Even for a strong Christian it was nice to have to face my own opinions on the issues in this series and be okay with them. Great show for people who want to be drawn in and part of the emotion as well as challenged in your ideological views.
Fans of character-driven dramas will see this show as a gift. It finds its footing as the season goes on, and emerges as smart, funny, touching and a very appealing humanity. Sure, it gets soap-ie at times and not every situation is realistic, but it's a fun and intelligent ride nonetheless. I liked every character and the acting is top drawer. Special kudos to Sally Field and Calista Flockhart. Can't imagine anyone not liking this show.
I came late to the series when it was originally shown, so I was delighted to have a chance to go back and view these episodes. I loved this series and was sorry to see it end. Wonderful writing, an incredibly fine ensemble cast, and sensitive handling of many issues made it memorable.
A good friend recommended this series to me. He knew that I would fall in love with the characters and plot. I have not been disappointed. I enjoy the balance of humor and difficulty in this series. I especially enjoy watching the family support each other.
